Local folklore will be on show this summer, focusing on the Kirkdale caves and the Nunnington dragon with other stories incorporating elements taken from local folklore.
Based on a range of real and mythological creatures from the Ryedale area, this exciting exhibition pulls together history, archaeology, science and folklore. The real creatures are themselves in some ways fantastical – creatures that lived here during the Ice Age, including mammoths, hyenas, and giant deer. It’s a great opportunity to explore how local myths were created and how even real stories can take on mythical status.
Images of original artwork by children’s author and illustrator Tim Hopgood and sensory textile creations by Wanda Hopgood based on Tim’s illustrations will showcase the story of the Kirkdale Caves. The exhibition will also feature artwork by children from local schools.
The project has been developed and coordinated by literacy specialist Rosie Barrett:
It’s been such a lovely project to work on – I worked closely with staff at the National Trust to develop the idea for an exhibition that was created together with young people from the region. We loved the idea that a professional space could be ‘taken over’ by a community, showcasing talent but also sharing the excitement around having an exhibition. Visitors to Nunnington Hall this summer will be able to contribute too!
The Creatures of Curiosity project was very much about inspiring young people with the local stories and places. Throughout the summer, I worked with six schools and a local library, often taking professional artists along with me, to tell stories, develop stories (changing them to include the children’s ideas and writing) and produce accompanying artwork. We wanted the children’s contribution to take pride of place in the exhibition alongside artwork and stories by professionals.
We’ve been so fortunate to have such artistic talent working on the project – including ceramicist and illustrator Karen Thompson, visual artist Serena Partridge, textile artist Wanda Szajna-Hopgood, and, of course, renowned children’s author Tim Hopgood. We are very excited about the final product!
This project has been developed with funding and support from Arts Council England, Ryedale District Council, Scarborough Museums and Galleries, Fossiliam and the National Trust. Rosie runs MakeMore Arts, a local arts organisation specialising in providing engaging ways for families and young people to take part in arts opportunities.
