Boxing Day Raft Race 2018 at Scarborough Harbour

December 26, 2018

For many Boxing Day in Scarborough is their favorite day of the year.

Eagerly anticipated, often months in advance, Boxing Day in Scarborough is a day when the whole town goes out. It’s a time to catch up with old friends, enjoy a drink together and prolong the festivities for as long as possible.

Tradition has it that this annual happening was originally termed ‘Ladies Day’. It was a day the fishermen’s wives were granted a well deserved day off, after working so hard to prepare for the family Christmas. The local pubs would opened and the ladies of the town would head out for a drink whilst the men stayed at home.

These days it’s a day for everyone. Pubs open early and are literally packed with revelers throughout the entire day. Many folk head down to the seafront pubs, the traditional starting point for the Boxing Day binge, where there are also several unique events held each year to keep the crowds entertained.

After the fun of the football the unusual entertainment continues with the Boxing Day Raft Race at the harbour. Organised by the Sub Aqua Club, the annual fancy-dress raft race starts at approximately 12:30pm.

Each year crowds flock to the harbourside to watch the teams battle to win the race on their home-made rafts – often pelting their competitors with eggs & flour along the way.

Spectators are advised to get there in good time if they want to see the action with crowds of up to 2,000 people expected at this years event.
