|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 11:00am on Sunday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, repeating until September 16, 2018

We tell the history of Scarborough and the port. We have a large reference archive and library that can be accessed by the public, along with a changing exhibition. For HODS we will have some historic photographs showing the history.

Scarborough is Britain’s first seaside resort, decades before Brighton! We were the fifth largest herring port in the country and the song ‘Scarborough Fair’ is based on the herring fair that goes back to medieval times. In the 1930s to 1950s we caught some of the largest Tuna fish ever landed in the UK. We also built ships that sailed the world, even taking convicts to Australia. We had the first cliff lift and the first bathing machines. The Spa waters attracted the first tourists in the 17th century and when the railway arrived in 1845 mass tourism began. Our museum has been open for nine years and is run entirely by volunteers and public donations. In 2016 we won the Queen’s Award for volunteering. You will always find something interesting to see!
