“A woman who is trained to offer practical and emotional support to another woman before after and during child birth” From the Greek word doula meaning servant of a woman
Doulas are there for women and families during pregnancy, birth and beyond, depending on the families needs.
A doula is someone who offers a continuous care, knowledge and practical help to a women, she does not replace the role of a midwife, she can not advise but she can offer information for the families to make their own choices, she will stay completely impartial and follow their lead and wishes.
Some women hire a doula just for the birth, others want support in pregnancy and after delivery too. A doula will work to the families needs.
Maria Machin is a family Doula in Scarborough.
Hope Anchors The Soul
Here she explains more…. About me I am a mum to 7 children, I have had various voluntary roles surrounding antenatal and post natal care for 6 years with a keen interest in breastfeeding. I am a facilitator for our local Attachment Parenting UK group and a regional coordinator. I am an Association of Breastfeeding mothers – Mother supporter and trainee counsellor. I am very passionate about nurturing from the beginning and giving a continuity of care. I want women to feel empowered by their own body and know that I am there to listen and advocate them. I will provide information and enable you to make informed choices so your transition into motherhood is as smooth as possible I will hold your space and be your voice if you require me, or I can simply hold your hand, protecting your space, for you to birth freely. I can link you to birth preparation classes, massage and holistic care that I’ve personally encountered and can recommend.
My Services – My main package will include 2 antenatal meets where we will discuss birth options, I have lots of literature and DVD’s you can borrow to help make informed decisions. I have a homeopathic birth kit you can look through and can link you with birth pool hire if you’d wish. I can help host a mother ceremony, where we will shower you in guidance, it’s a lovely way to celebrate your upcoming birth, the transition from woman to mother. I will be on call for 4 weeks surrounding your due date, and will stay with you until you feel confident with your chosen feeding and you are both comfortable. I then will see you once post natally as part of my package but can be seen more if required. I am here to support you and your family both emotionally and practically, I can never speak for you, but can back anything you choose to do and will repeat your wishes as often as needed.
Postnatal – I can offer as many sessions as you require, sometimes just a few reassurance meets is sufficient, doing some meal making or simply coming with you as you venture outside. I will be here to help emotionally and practically as you wish to have a positive start with your new family.
