Good2learn is a brand new, online learning platform for Primary school age children, built and developed in Hull. Its aim is to make life easier to support your child in Maths and English and to help them reach their full potential. They’re based at the C4Di building on the Fruit Market so I popped in to meet the team and have a sneaky peek.
The difference with this learning platform is that the lessons are delivered by real people. They are easy to follow and aligned to the current national curriculum, aimed at Primary school children particularly ages 7-11. My son is 7 and I’ve seen a few online learning apps and websites by now but they have all been cartoons, it’s really refreshing to see a real person deliver a real lesson. Each 2-5 minute lesson has been developed by local teachers and education professionals and they are delivered on Good2Learn by their friendly and engaging presenters.
Here’s a short video showing what the lessons are like:
I showed a few of the lessons to my 7 year old to see what he thought and he really liked them, and to be honest so did I. They are really easy to use, you pick either Maths or English then have topics to choose from. I asked my son what he’d done at school recently and we picked a short lesson on fractions to watch together and then do the exercises. I learned how to do fractions! It’s been far too many years than I care to say since I was at school learning about fractions and I had completely forgotten most of it, so I learned something too. I also didn’t look bad in front of him when he asked for help on one of the exercise questions!
He liked listening to the ‘real people’ and seeing how well he’d done on the exercises. We also tried the time one and a few English ones about silent letters and ‘i before e’. With all of the sections, not only did he really understand what he was being taught, but I did too so I could help him, confident that I was ‘doing it right’ and doing it how he is being taught at school.
To make it easy the platform has been developed to work across all devices so can be used on a smart phone, tablet, laptop and desktop computer. We did a few lessons at home on my laptop and then also a few while waiting for a pub tea to arrive on my phone.
Good2Learn are bridging the gap between classroom and home, and helping parents help their children. Founder Paul Mandalia told me about the concept –
“Sometimes, it’s very frustrating when trying to help your kids with their homework. A lot of the methods and requirements that children have to follow have changed since we were at school, which can mean that either we can’t help or we just confuse them.”
“On top of the video lessons, Good2Learn motivates children through awards and certificates for their efforts, provides interactive exercises and quizzes, tracks progress, and notifies parents when their child has logged on and completed tasks. We’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response from teachers, head teachers, parents and the kids themselves.”
Good2Learn is a subscription based learning platform and they have a special limited time launch offer running at the moment to receive 50% off the usual price, making the monthly subscription just £9.99 a month instead of £19.99 for both maths and English subjects. A family with up to three children can access the platform for that price, watch lessons and complete digital interactive exercises.
