The Puffin Festival was held this weekend(14th & 15th May) at Flamborough. Our lovely Mumbler users popped along…..
We parked in the carpark at North Landing(£1.80 for the day) and firstly visited the tents set up by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust where there was lots of interactive tasks for children and adults all about Puffins, the Yorkshire Coast and Wildlife along with valuable lessons in how long it takes rubbish to break down in the sea. You got to make your own Puffin mask here and there was a pop up story tent with puppets. All children left with a certificate.
We booked ourselves onto a guided walk(£5 per adult, £3 per child) and with just over an hour to kill grabbed a coffee and went down to the beach to do a little rockpooling and spot our first Puffins of the day.
The guided walk was great. My advice would be to book this as soon as you arrive. You can do the walk without a guide if you wish but we wanted the full experience today! We had 3 guides and they were all great. Lots of advice on where to go, wildlife and flora and fauna as well as which binoculars to use and they even brought a telescope which gave us amazing views far superior to the binoculars. We saw lots of birds including the Puffins such as Gulls, Kittiwakes and Guillemots. The walk before ours saw the Dolphins but sadly they’d moved on while we were on the beach so we missed them!
We then went back towards the beach and made our own Puffin Puppet with Scrapstore. You could also make a kite but we chose to do the puppet. The staff here were fantastic and activities free of charge.
We then called back at the information tents on our way back to the car to buy some souvenirs(some of these weren’t cheap but with all proceeds going to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust it’s all on a good cause and the event was so lovely it was nice to put some money in the coffers in return for our wonderful time).
We picked up lots of really fabulous leaflets too about Bees, Hedgehogs and all sorts of wildlife. I hadn’t realised just how many events and activities there are on that part of the coast. It took me back to my days in the Young Ornithologists Club. We will be back soon for sure!
