In an EXCLUSIVE blog for Mumbler, during the TDY 2018, Lizzie Deignan, reigning Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Champion has agreed to answer your questions…
We were inundated with questions from across the Mumbler Network so we picked 10 from TDY stage areas.
What are your favourite local bike rides? North Leeds I like riding to the Cavendish Pavilion at Bolton Abbey because that’s where I got married so it brings back lovely memories and it has beautiful views. I also like riding to Pately bridge from Otley, over the moors.
Any tips for family members doing the Maserati Tour De Yorkshire Sportive? Ryedale Enjoy a big meal of carbs the night before and be prepared for all weather conditions with appropriate kit and clothing but most importantly remember to enjoy yourself and the countryside and views on the way around.
What inspired you to take up cycling? How old were you? Ryedale BC! I came to cycling comparatively late when British Cycling came to my school as part of a talent ID programme when I was 15. I had the chance to miss a lesson and have a go on the bikes they bought in and my competitive instinct kicked in and I ended up racing the boys. BC spotted something and I ended up joining the Academy and it all went from there.
Where is your favourite cycling spot in the world? Wharfedale Am I allowed to say this to Yorkshire readers haha!! But it’s Donegal! It has everything – beaches, mountains and not much traffic – oh and it’s where my husband is from.
What are your tips as to how to get kids involved in competitive cycling? Scarborough I would suggest joining a local club and don’t forget to enjoy it. Tip to the parents – don’t spend too much money on expensive bikes and kit before they’ve decided they like it or not!
Hi my partner and I are keen cyclists, we have an 18-month-old daughter and want to take her out with us on our bikes but we’re not sure whether to get a fixed to the back of a bike or a trailer, do you know which is safest or best option? West Leeds I’ll tell you in a couple of years time when I’ve had mine! At the moment I’m afraid it’s not something I’ve experienced.
What exercise are you still doing whilst pregnant and what would you recommend for mums-to-be that want to stay active? West Leeds I’m still exercising up to three hours a day but I’m used to a schedule of 5 hours a day so I would say it depends on your starting level of fitness and take expert advice from your doctor – but don’t be afraid to exercise if you always have done.
My son has no interest in riding a bike (he did until we took off the stabilisers), I’d love for us to be able to go out for a family bike ride but don’t know the best way to encourage him. Any advice? Wharfedale My parents forced us and that worked!! Maybe try a sport that he likes first and then ask him to join you to compromise?? Even if that’s a computer game. Or encourage his friends to join maybe?
How did living in Otley shape your cycling carer? North Leeds I feel very grateful that I grew up in Otley and my early cycling life was on the hard and rolling roads of Yorkshire – stunning and challenging all at the same time – with such varied conditions. It certainly prepares you well.
Hi Lizzie, I’m due to have a baby at the same time as you, also my first. I’m usually a regular runner and try to keep in shape but am struggling with finding exercises to keep me fit and strong through pregnancy. What are you doing to keep healthy? Ripon I think it is very individual. Honestly, I would say google it – even as a pro that’s what I do and there is so much good advice and info out there for pregnant women and re exercise. But I would also remember not to be hard on yourself.
