A Christmas Masquerade (Saturday 16th November – Sunday 5th January)

Enjoy a truly magical day out as Castle Howard is transformed for the festive season. Experience the magnificent decorations as you journey through the House’s grand state rooms. Open fires, candle light and live music evoke all that we love about this special time of year, with the iconic 25 foot traditional Christmas tree adorned with over 3000 baubles providing a breath-taking highlight in the Great Hall.

Inspirational design team Charlotte Lloyd Webber and Bretta Gereke have worked with the theme ‘A Christmas Masquerade’ to produce a stunning array of flamboyant displays and installations to surprise and delight visitors of all ages. The Castle Howard “Christmas Masquerade” celebrates the House’s theatrical roots and the influence of the Italian Baroque on its magnificent architecture and interiors.

The House prepares for a grand masked ball inspired by the Venetian Carnival to be held in the Long Gallery spectacularly adorned as the Grand Canal. Amongst the sumptuous decorations and awe inspiring costumes, a troupe of travelling players prepare festive entertainments for the guests. These ebullient, mischievous characters – Harlequin, Colombine, Pierrot and the Zanni Clown are part of the famous Commedia dell Arte who became the much-loved characters of the pantomimes that remain one of our best beloved Christmas traditions. A magical immersive experience that will embody the spirit of the season in true Castle Howard style.

It is easy to spend a full day here as you soak up the jovial atmosphere, enjoy an array of indulgent winter warmers across our catering outlets and complete your Christmas shopping in our Gift Shops, Farm Shop and Garden Centre.

And don’t miss the opportunity to meet the big man himself as Father Christmas will be making some very special visits throughout December to the Courtyard Grotto.. Details here

Saturday 30th November – Sunday 22nd December, Daily 10am-4pm

Scampston is once again opening its doors for you to come along and purchase your own estate grown Christmas tree.

Nigel Harrison, our head woodsman, and his team aim to produce the finest Christmas trees straight from our plantations. They take great pride in their thorough approach to growing and caring for our crop. Each year the young trees are meticulously hand-shaped and pruned in order to encourage the tree to branch and gradually achieve the full appearance of a perfectly proportioned Christmas tree.

We grow two species, the traditional Norway Spruce and the needle-holding Nordman Fir, in a wide variety of sizes. When each tree is harvested, another is planted in its place, ensuring the production of our trees is entirely sustainable.

So why not come along to Scampston Walled Garden with your family and choose your very own Scampston-grown Christmas tree! Don’t forget; annual members of Scampston Walled Garden are entitled to a 10% discount on their Christmas tree.

Our cafe will also be open on weekends throughout December for you to enjoy a festive drink and a piece of cake while you choose your tree. Unfortunately, entrance to the Walled Garden itself will remain closed until next season.

Robin Hoods Bay Victorian Weekend at Robin Hood’s Bay

Friday 6th – Sunday 8th December 10am – 5pm 2019

The 2019 Victorian Weekend is organised by the RHB Tourism Association and will see the return of children’s favourite – Santa. Other exciting activities usually take place such as Welly-throwing on the beach, Victorian games, a Christmas card competition, a costume competition, a Sheep Hunt, talks about the Dickensian era and Smuggling in Victorian times.

There will be music everywhere you go, in the streets, in the pubs later on, in churches and a Variety Concert and a Pie & Pea supper. Feast your eyes at the art exhibition and old crafts, visit period cottages and discover Robin Hood’s Bay on a guided walk, learn about St Hilda’s snakes and sea monsters, follow your duck in the annual RNLI Duck Race and marvel at the beauty and ingenuity of all the Christmas trees in St Stephen’s Church.

Carollers, Hand-bell ringers, lucky dips, tombolas, draws, spinning demonstrations, ganseys, mince pies, plenty of music and surprises await you.
