It’s the time of year that every parent looks forward to and dreads in equal measure.  A six-week break from dragging the kids out of bed every morning but also a seemingly interminable period of finding ways to occupy them.  As you’d expect, we think getting the young ones out mountain biking in Dalby Forest – and anywhere else for that matter – is a great way of amusing them and enjoying family time together.  As the last 18 months have proved, fresh air, nature and exercise are essential for everyone’s health and wellbeing.

This Summer we are running a variety of cycling courses from ‘Learn to Ride’ to more advanced sessions.  For more information, dates and to book, visit our website:  www.dalbyforestcyclehub.co.uk

Based in the Courtyard, our hire centre is situated at the start of the trails and is open 7 days a week throughout Summer from 9am–5pm every day, except Thursdays 10am-5pm.    For bike hire, pre-booking is advisable to ensure we have bikes available for you – telephone us on 01751 460585 to arrange.

In our shop, we have a selection of kids’ bikes, clothing, helmets and accessories to help keep your little ones happy and safe.

Happy pedalling!

Northwood Trail is nestled in a 100 acre wood at Buttercrambe close to York and this delightful woodland fairy and hobgoblin sanctuary is the first of its kind in the world. The eco-aware sanctuary is off grid and, quite uniquely, designed to appeal to adults as much as children. The intriguing Fairy and Hobgoblin Museum displays what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of fairy and hobgoblin artefacts.

The woodland trail winds through 1.5km of old fairy paths, peppered with fairy tree houses, stump houses, a willow walled maze and Elven thrones. There is also a natural play area for smaller children and den building for older kids.

The woodland kitchen serves organic teas and coffees as well as healthy and delicious local food.

I took my 7 year old granddaughter and 3 year old grandson to Northwood during the school holidays on one of the days that I was looking after them. It was such an easy day out – a nice drive through the countryside and straight forward to find from the instructions, easy to park and find our way in and I felt very safe and relaxed going around the trail with the two of them. The woodland was absolutely magical, both of my grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed it and so did I. It was lovely to go around together and spend the time making memories in somewhere so peaceful and enchanting.

I’d highly recommend this as a day out for other grandparents to do while looking after their grandchildren.

MonsterHero Safari – Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Bridlington, Hornsea, Withernsea

MonsterHero Safari is a high street experience where families are tasked with hunting down 10 monster superheroes, displayed in public windows, and learning their names, origin stories and powers. Children will delight in spotting the cute, colourful characters when they spot all 10 they can download a free e-book with the characters first team-up adventure. Trails have been set-up in towns across the Yorkshire Coast, including Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea.

Recently we have seen the power of ‘experience trails’ as people look for activities to do safely with their families. Rainbows and teddy bears displayed in residential windows have become synonymous with the lockdown. MonsterHero Safari works by utilising contactless NFC technology and QR codes, without the need for players to download or sign up to anything. The safari consists of 10 vinyl window characters, with embedded NFC tags that mostly independent retailers will host.

To take part simply:

1. Tap any character decal with your phone to unlock the little monster to get started
2. Learn their names, stories and powers and find out where the next is hiding
3. When you’ve found them all you will unlock your very own ebook!

Families will be able to start the safari by tapping or scanning any of the characters and simply donating whatever they can. To launch this activity Yorkshire Coast BID will be providing 1000 games completely free, to boost participation and build momentum.

For families on the safari, they will be able to engage with the experience by tapping each character’s belly and learning their names, stories, and powers. Younger children will delight in spotting the cute and colourful characters in window corners and older (and grown-up children) will engage by learning more about them.

All the trails are live now and will be running until the end of September 2020.
