The Race is Back On! So after a turbulent year for all, the Macmillan Charity Race at York Races #rideoftheirlives has been rescheduled for Friday 24th September 2021.
I was so happy to be back riding out at Tim Easterby’s. As you can see from the photo – this has to be one of the most picturesque gallops with a beautiful view over Ryedale. What better way to start the day?!
Whilst we have been in lockdown and I have been home schooling very keen 6 and 8 year olds, I have been trying to work on my fitness at home. I was so pleased to “trot up sound” after my first morning riding out so obviously I had done an ok job, albeit getting my jumper on and off proved a bit tricky as my arms were a bit sore! More work required but I am back up and running.
As I get back into the swing of juggling everything with riding out, I am getting a few more fundraising ideas together. It is tricky after the year we have endured and the uncertainty of the road map out, making face to face parties more of a gamble until we know where we are. Having had to cancel three events last year, I want to concentrate on things that can go ahead! Thinking outside the box is required.
As I write this blog, it is tinged with sadness. I lost my biggest supporter last year, the lady that encouraged me all through life and made everything possible. Mum always saw that I had nice ponies and horses to ride where possible, attended virtually every competition and was always there for advice, whether I wanted it or not! Racing was her lifelong passion and we spent many an hour discussing racing and horses pedigrees. I know how much she would have loved to see me ride down the Knavesmire. Last spring, when she was poorly, I would ride out at Tim’s then stop off on my way home to have a cup of tea and tell her all about the morning. One morning I announced I had ridden 6 and was a bit tired! She replied “I’d just like to have ridden one”. She was the toughest and bravest lady, I just hope she’s passed a little bit onto me.
I know she will be looking down and let’s hope I can make her proud. Rest assured I will be working hard to do so. Sadly, she could only have a send off under Covid Restrictions, so we will be raising a glass when it is all done on the 24th September 2021.
