Roald Dahl is a child hood favourite author of many throughout the world. He is fast becoming that of Henry (6 years) too. Given Thursday is Roald Dahl Day and Saturday was a wet day, we did some Roald Dahl crafts and activities….plus found a few more we didn’t have time for, so thought we would put them into a blog in case you need inspiration for a wet day!
The Enormous Crocodile
The list is endless but here we unsurprisingly made crocodiles. Eliza (3 years) made a tissue paper mosaic crocodile. I had to draw the outline and away she went!
Henry wanted to build his crocodile so loo rolls were found and painted. We actually used Little Brian Paint Sticks (Eliza was given them for Christmas) which mean little mess (the best sort of painting!). For the teeth, Henry found some page markers (like small post it notes) and used them for teeth!
The BFG – Dream Jars
You will need:
Empty glass jar with lid (e.g. an old jam jar)
Cotton wool
Glitter
Food colouring
Water
How to make a BFG Dream Jar:
Fill the jar loosely with cotton wool.
Top up with water.
Add in some glitter.
Add in a few drops of food colouring (don’t go wild) until you get the depth of colour you are looking for.
Screw on the lid tightly and give the mixture a shake at this point to ensure the food colouring is mixed through. Add a little more if needed.
Why not make a few different dream jars of different colours and line them up on your shelves. Perhaps get creative too…
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Chocolate Rice Krispie buns
Having done all the crafts, there was a request for a snack and “can we make it?” Henry then asked if it could be Roald Dahl related. The best I could come up with that I had all the ingredients for was these. I love them and they are really easy (albeit not healthy!).
Melt the chocolate in a glass bowl over a pan of boiling water. Add a knob of butter and 2 table spoons of golden syrup. Once melted, remove from the heat and stir in the rice krispies (stir in plenty!). Then add some marshmallows. We did this in a big bowl. I then gave each child a Yorkshire Pudding tin, into which they placed their bun cases. They then filled them themselves. A bit of mess but not too bad and ready to eat! Took 15 mins max.
Augustus Gloop Wanted Poster
We didn’t make this but plan to next weekend! I thought we would tea soak some paper to make it look like parchment. I would then burn the edges (for the old effect) and then Henry could design the Wanted Poster.
James and the Giant Peach
This is one of my favourites. We listened to the audio book and I just loved all the insects. We plan to make each one using the recycling. Egg boxes make great caterpillars for example. In fact they are great for loads of insects including ladybirds and spiders too!
What’s more, Dalby Forest are running some FREE Forest Adventure Games from Saturday 15th September to Saturday 23rd September. These include Peach volleyball and a creature hunt. They also recommend picking up a ‘My Forest Adventure Kit‘ from the Visitor Centre for £7.50. Inside you’ll find activities, binoculars, a bug magnifier and more! For more details, click here.
Roald Dahl Puffin Passport
We saw this in the back of our book and thought it would be fun to do ourselves. Henry spent ages, copying the layout then asking a few questions about Roald Dahl’s answers…
If you decide to do any activities or crafts, do share them on with the Ryedale & The Coast Mumbler Chat Group, @ryedalemumbler on Twitter and or Instagram.
Thank you and enjoy…
