It is one of the tastiest days of the year! It’s a great excuse to sneak some sugar into tea time! There’s much debate over the toppings so we have them all. Whether you’re after sweet or savoury, traditional or something with a twist, we have put together four delicious recipes and five fun pancake-themed activities for the little ones. How else would you celebrate pancake day?
1. Create a Pancake Kitchen Role Play Area – Turn a cardboard box upside down and draw 2 big circles for a hob, a few dials. You could even add some faux flames. Give your little one a toy spatula and a toy pan. (You can always use grown up utensils and pans if you feel your child is ok to play with them). Print photos of ingredients, grab toy food and cut a bunch of ‘pancakes’ out of brown cardboard. Let your little one discover their pancake day role play area and get ready to eat 300x pretend pancakes.
2. Flip the Pancake Memory Game– make a stack of ‘pancakes’ – ideally out of card but paper will work as well. Draw letters, numbers or shapes on pairs of pancakes. Depending on the age of your child, you may only want to do a few pairs. Turn all of the pancakes face down and shuffle them around. With your little one, take turns to turn two pancakes over at a time, trying to find matching pairs. Fun and educational!
3. Pancake Treasure Hunt – Cut out some paper pancakes and hide them around the house and garden (like an Easter egg hunt). Younger children might want to have letters on them that spell a big word. Older children could have clues on the back of each one that leads them to the next.
4. Make a Pancake Story – Have you ever made paper dolls, us the same idea. concertina fold a strip of paper in to 5 and cut in to a pancake shape (remember to leave the folded edges intact). Let your little one create a pancake story, you could add the words. Or draw faces and give them silly pancake names. Lady Pan Cakius, Sir Lemon Sugar, King treacle toppings,
5. What would you like on your Pancake – Draw or print some pancakes and children can have fun decorating them with all the toppings of their imaginations!
